Demographics

Vaughan is a dynamic and vibrant city, and one of the fastest growing communities in southern Ontario. The city attracts thousands of people who choose to work or live in a prosperous community, with a wealth of strong historic neighbourhoods, cultural heritage, stable economy, ethnic diversity, innovative leadership, and municipal services.

About 46 percent of the population is composed of immigrants, and over 99 languages are spoken in schools, workplaces, and at home. The major ethnic groups are Italian, Jewish, Canadian, Russian, East Indian, Chinese, and Polish, among others.

Established in 1850 as a Township, Vaughan has a fairly small population of around 5,000 residents. Following an influx of immigrants after the Second World War, the population rose to 16,000 by the 1960s. After incorporation as a City in 1991, it experienced explosive growth that decade to reach 111,000 residents. Between 1996 and 2006, the City’s population grew at a rate of 82 percent. In 2013, Vaughan had a population of over 315,000.

Economy

Vaughan is recognised as one of the top three performing economies in Canada. Strategically located at the country’s economic centre, the city has established itself as the gateway of economic activity in the GTA. It has both location and accessibility to international markets, boasting both a diverse business base and a well-educated, young, multi-linguistic, and highly-skilled workforce. The median age of the population is 37.9 years.

Vaughan’s strong population growth has been the city’s driving force for its incredible economic progress. Its skilled, educated, and affluent residents generate significant demand for an increasingly diverse range of products and services.

The major employment sectors in Vaughan include:

  • Manufacturing – 33.1 percent
  • Retail trade – 14.3 percent
  • Construction – 13.5 percent
  • Wholesale trade – 9.1 percent
