City of London Demographics

82 percent of the population in London is European. Latin Americans, Arabs, Blacks, South Asians, Chinese Canadians, and Aboriginals make up 2.7, 2.6, 2.4, 2.2, 2.0, and 1.9 percent of the population, respectively. There are many other groups that make up the remaining 4 percent of the population. These and other nationalities constitute the 366,151 people in the City of London, according to the 2011 Canadian Census.

The average age of London’s population is 38.2 years, which means that companies can tap into a largely youthful workforce.

Economy

The main occupations in London are insurance, medical research, manufacturing, and information technology. Most of the biotechnology and life sciences-related research is either carried out or facilitated by the University of Western Ontario, which contributes approximately $1.5 billion to the economy of London annually.

While manufacturing jobs in the City diminished following the 2009 economic crisis, technology jobs increased drastically, with London hosting 300 technology companies as of 2016. The IT sector creates about 3 percent of jobs in London. Note that one of the top websites on the internet, Diply, is located in London. Most of these new companies now occupy the former industrial spaces and factories situated in and around the downtown core that were remodelled into contemporary offices.

Good examples of this include the Info-Tech Research Group that moved its London office into what used to be a hosiery factory; Arcane Digital that moved into an industrial building built in the 1930s; and rTraction digital media firm that currently occupies the London Roundhouse – a century+ old steam locomotive repair shop.

But most people in London work at the London Health Sciences Centre, which has about 10,555 employees.

London attracts a lot of businesses, with some of the most recent and notable ones being the London Life Insurance Company, GoodLife Fitness, Imperial Oil, and Carling and Labatt breweries. The second biggest credit union in Ontario, Libro Financial Group, is also located here. It was founded in 1951 and currently has over 550 employees. Canada Trust, which was founded in 1864 is also based in London.

Other major employers in London include General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) with 2,400 workers and McCormick Canada with 600 employees. Some of London residents work in factories outside the city, including Toyota, General Motors and CAMI.

How much can a manager expect to earn working in London?

Getting a managerial or executive job in London, Ontario is likely to get you a decent income of over$ 60,000. This is nearly the same as the average after tax income of most households ($62,000), which makes working in such a position quite rewarding. Otherwise, the average income before tax for males in the City of London is around $45,500, while that for females is around $33,500. This is according to the National Household survey in 2011, and figures may have changed a bit.
